Protecting Small Businesses in California

As a small business owner, I’ve experienced firsthand how the system can be abused. I’m currently being sued for wrongful termination—by an employee who quiet quit, stopped doing their job, got caught, and was let go. Now, they’re suing me for $745,000, hoping for a settlement.

Well, I’m not settling.

Too many businesses give in to these legal threats, fueling a system that feels more like extortion than justice. If we keep paying up, lawyers will keep playing this game—knowing businesses would rather settle than fight. And to those who say, “It’s just the cost of doing business in California”—I refuse to accept that. These costs get passed down to consumers, driving up prices for everyone.

I’ve built this company over 24 years, employing up to 50 people. But if this continues, businesses like mine could disappear. That’s why I need help. I’m looking for other business owners, legal experts, media outlets, and policymakers willing to fight back and push for change.

One simple reform could make a huge difference: If a lawyer takes a case on contingency and loses, they should be responsible for the defendant’s legal fees. This would stop baseless lawsuits in their tracks.
